Colonel Raul Lianez

Col Raul Lianez is a native of Norfolk, Virginia. He enlisted in the US Navy in May of 1988 to attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), Newport, Rhode Island. He graduated from NAPS in May of 1989; a month later he was inducted to the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. He received a Bachelor of Science in General Science and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in June 1993. After completing The Basic School, Quantico, Virginia, he reported for flight training at NAS Pensacola, Florida in May 1994. 1st Lt Lianez received his Naval Aviator Wings at NAS Whiting Field, Florida in February of 1996. He next reported to fleet replacement squadron HMM (T)-204, MCAS New River, North Carolina for CH-46E flight training. In July of 1996 he was designated a CH-46E pilot and received orders to his first fleet squadron, HMM-165 at MCAS El Toro, California.
In his first tour as a HMM-165 White Knight, 1st Lt Lianez served as the Assistant Logistics Officer and Embarkation Officer completing the squadron’s BRAC move to MCAS Miramar, California in September of 1998. As a newly promoted Capt, he deployed with HMM-165(R) on WestPac aboard the USS Peleliu with the 11th MEU (SOC) from June to December of 1999. During the deployment he executed HADR operations in East Timor during Operation STABILISE and amphibious operations in the Persian Gulf during Operation SOUTHERN WATCH. Upon return from WestPac, Capt Lianez attended the Weapons and Tactics Instructor’s (WTI) Course at MCAS Yuma, Arizona.
During his second tour with HMM-165, Capt Lianez served as the Assistant Operations Officer and Squadron WTI. In July of 2001, he departed HMM-165 to attend the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Maj Lianez received a Master of Science in Manpower Systems Analysis in May of 2003. He next reported for duty at Headquarters Marine Corps, MCB Quantico, Virginia.
From June of 2003 to July 2006, Maj Lianez served as the Assistant Distribution and Staffing Goal Modeling Officer for Officer Assignments Branch, MM Division. He returned to the operating forces in August of 2006 by completing refresher training at HMM (T)-164 and then joining the Red Dragons of HMM-268 at MCAS Camp Pendleton, California. Maj Lianez served as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer deploying with the Red Dragons during OIF 06.08-2 to Al Taqaddum, Iraq from August to March of 2008.
Upon returning from OIF, he assumed the duties of the HMM-268 Executive Officer from June to March 2009. His last assignment in MAG-39 was as the Director of Safety and Standardization until May 2009.
LtCol Lianez took command of Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron One, 1st MAW, Okinawa, Japan on 9 June, 2009. His Marines participated in HADR operations in the Philippines (PHIBLEX), TSC in Thailand (Cobra Gold), and Korean Peninsula exercises (KR and UFG). MWHS-1 deployed Marines during 2011 in support of HADR for OPERATION TOMODACHI, the nuclear and tsunami disaster on Honshu Island, Japan.
Following squadron command, LtCol Lianez attended TLS at the Marine Corps War College, Quantico, Virginia, earning a Masters in Strategic Studies. In 2012, He received follow on orders to the Chairman Joint Chief of Staff, Joint Operation Directorate (J-3), the Pentagon.
While in the J-3, LtCol Lianez served as the Deputy Division Chief of Pacific Division responsible to the Director of Operations (DJ3) for joint operations within the USPACOM AOR. He specialized in joint operations for Korea, Japan, Philippines, China and South East Asia. He also served as a Battle Captain of the Crisis Management Team in the National Military Command Center.
LtCol Lianez returned for his second tour at MM Division, Headquarters Marine Corps, MCB Quantico, Virginia in July of 2014 assuming the duties as Head of Enlisted Retention, Enlisted Assignments. After one year in Retention, he took the duties as Head, Manpower Integration Branch, MM Division. He was promoted to his current rank in February 2016.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, the Air Medal Numeral 5, the Navy Commendation Medal with gold star, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy Achievement medal with gold star.
Col Lianez is married to the former Ms. Dusti Turner of Gulf Breeze, Florida. They have three children, Kylie age eleven, and Noah age eight, and Morgan age five.
